- Session: Establishing the Proper Environment for Conducting a Successful Performance Appraisal
Below are some more details about this course:
Target participants:
This course was specifically designed for managers, directors, deputy managers of departments, or supervisors who have staff reporting directly to them. The purpose of this course was to provide the skills needed by managers to conduct performance appraisals effectively.
Assumptions about current management practices:
The following assumptions regarding conduct of performance appraisals at SMEs were made in the design of this course:
- Directors, managers/deputy managers of departments and supervisors tend to pay more attention to their technical tasks rather than performance appraisal. Human resource management is generally undervalued.
- The time needed for managers to carry out their human resource management duties is not sufficient.
- Managers often attempt to pass on their human resource management responsibilities to the Department of Human Resources.
Assumptions about participants’ knowledge and skills:
The following assumptions regarding conduct of performance appraisals at SMEs were made in the design of this course:
- Directors and managers of departments have been promoted to managerial positions without necessarily having been trained in skills related to Human Resource management.
- Managers tend to undervalue the importance of performance appraisal.
- Among managers who have conducted performance appraisals, the task has been approached simplistically and perfunctorily done.
- Managers have inadequate communication skills needed for providing feedback and engaging in open conversations with staff members regarding the outcome of their performance appraisal.
